Reducer 2 : (1) (Fire Pr) a. A coupling with a female thread on one side and a smaller-diameter male thread on the other, used to attach small hose lines to large ones. b. Any adapter used to connect a smaller-diameter conduit to a larger. Ant: Increaser. (2) (Chem) (a) A substance that removes oxygen from another substance in a chemical reaction. Hydrogen and carbon are common reducing agents. (b) A substance containing an atom that loses one or more electrons in a chemical reaction. Ant: Oxidizer. Note: Oxidation and reduction are necessarily simultaneous processes in a chemical reaction. As one reactant is being oxidized, another must be reduced
