Reflection Coefficient

Reflection Coefficient : The amplitude ratio of the reflected wave relative to the incident wave at an interface. In seismology, the coefficients are found by imposing boundary conditions that the seismic displacement and the traction acting on the discontinuity surface are continuous across the surface. These conditions physically mean a welded contact and absence of extra-seismic sources at the discontinuity. Coefficients have been defined for different normalizations and signs of the component waves, e.g. energy or displacement (Knott 1899; Zoeppritz, 1919). See transmission coefficient, Chapman (2002, p.110-112) and Aki and Richards (2002 or 2009, p. 128-149)
