Refraction 3 : (Opt) A change in the direction of light rays or other electromagnetic waves as they pass from one medium into another. Note: If the velocity of propagation is less in the second medium than in the first, the direction of the incident radiation bends toward the normal. In the opposite case, the radiation bends away from the normal. The mathematical relation for refraction is known as Snell's law. Sound waves and water waves are similarly subject to refraction
