Stanine

Stanine : A statistical unit used in educational testing. Test scores are normalized (mathematically transformed) so that they have a mean ("average") of 5 and a standard deviation of 2. This tranformation naturally divides the ranked scores into 9 classes called stanines 1-9. The percentage of scores in each stanine is 4, 7, 12, 17, 20, 17, 12, 7, and 4, respectively. The technique originated in the U.S. military during World War II, and the word is a contraction of "standard of nine."
