CBRN Safety 056

CBRN Safety 056 :

Chapter I - Overview: (5) General Planning Considerations for CBRN Response: (B) General Planning Strategy for Decontamination: (1) Considering the scope of the emergency and determining proper decontamination procedures for different scenarios can help this process run more efficiently. Different forms of decontamination can be worked into response plans for different scenarios. (2) Decontamination operations should be set up in the warm zone, which is sometimes also referred to as the contamination reduction corridor. It should be far enough away from the hazard that decontamination workers are not in immediate danger. (3) If the decontamination line or area is established outdoors, it should be in an area that is upwind of the hazard. (4) Locate decontamination lines in areas easily accessible to ambulances or other emergency transport vehicles if at all possible. (5) Determining the number of decontamination lines necessary is also a factor to consider. For a small incident, one line may be sufficient. If casualties are being taken from the area by one group of responders while another group of responders stops or cleans up a spill, it might be advantageous to have multiple lines: one for ambulatory casualties, a second for responders and equipment or non-ambulatory casualties. (6) Everyone and everything that comes out of the hot zone must be checked for contamination and decontaminated as necessary. Critical medical treatment should not be delayed for thorough radiological decontamination. However, contaminated clothing from the casualty should be removed, and initial skin decontamination should be completed if possible because a contaminated individual can easily pass contamination on to emergency medical personnel, ambulances or response vehicles, and hospital emergency rooms - potentially putting these resources out of service until they can be properly decontaminated. In a large-scale emergency, this can be very problematic.
