Steroid Hormones : Hormones have a wide variety of structures and properties, but very important in the regulation of sexual development and behaviour are a group of related hormones based on the steroid structure. These are essentially ring structures, containing three six-membered rings and one five membered ring. Cholesterol is also a steroid. The most important of the steroid sex hormones are the oestrogens, progesterone and testosterone. All of these are found in both males and females, but the balance between the female (oestrogens, progesterone) and male (testosterone) hormones differs between the sexes
