Storage, High-Stacked

Storage, High-Stacked : Storage in warehouses using an open metalwork system of racks in which goods are stored. The goods are placed on metal pallets or loading boards on arrival and then conveyed to a specified position in the racking. Fork lift trucks can handle goods up to about 8 m but if mechanically operated moving appliances are used such as tracked stacker cranes goods can be handled to much greater height-up to 30 and even 45 m. System may have computerised controls. The warehouses may be constructed in two ways: (a) purpose-built, with an integrated structure, the racking acting as the support for the roof and having the wall cladding attached to it, and (b) where the racking is separate from, and does not support the roof or walls. These are lower buildings - 10 to 12 m in height. Older warehouses may be converted to this type of system by the installation of racking and handling equipment
