Stress 13 : Generally, a surface force, measured per unit area. In a solid, the force per unit area that acts on or within a body. Given a vertical column of material, along any imaginary horizontal plane within the column, the material above the plane, because of its weight, exerts a force on the material below the plane. Similarly, the part of the column below the plane exerts an equal upward force; the mutual action-reaction along a surface then constitutes a stress
