Structural Elements, Fire Tests

Structural Elements, Fire Tests : Structural elements are tested using the fire test methods in B. S. 476 pt 8 in the U. K. The specimen is progressively heated in an accurately controlled furnace, the temperature of which varies with time (in accordance with international standard). The fire resistance of the element is the time in minutes from the start of the test until failure occurs under one of the following criteria: (1) stability, i. e. the ability of the specimen tested to withstand deformation or collapse; (2) integrity, the ability to withstand cracking or opening up to the extent of allowing flames to pass through; (3) insulation, i. e. the ability of the face of the element not exposed to heat to remain comparatively cool. If no failure occurs the test is carried through to completion - 360 min
