RACE and PASS (to fire safety)

RACE and PASS (to fire safety) :

RACE and PASS(to fire safety):RACE is an acronym that stands for Rescue, Alarm, Contain and Extinguish respectively. It is important that you and your staff be prepared to respond to fires and other emergencies. Review this basic critical fire response guide with your team on a regular basis and follow it in case of a fire or suspected fire. “R” stands for Rescue or Remove: Immediately stop what you are doing, assist and rescue anyone in the immediate danger from the fire and help get them to a safe area as fast as possible. “A” stands for Alarm or Activate: Alert others by activating nearest available fire alarm system or call the emergency number to report location of fire and/or the front desk (as applicable) to report the location and current extent of the fire. The front desk is then notified so that the entire disaster response team can be quickly notified. “C” stands for Confine or Contain: Confine the fire as much as possible by closing doors and windows behind you during evacuation, so that/until you can safely reach to contain the fire. During evacuation close the doors behind you. “E” stands for Extinguish: Only attempt to put out small controllable fires if (a) it is safe for you to do so and (b) if you have proper equipment and it is safe to do it by yourself, otherwise Evacuate. Ambulatory persons should be instructed to leave under their own power and report to the Emergency Assembly Point. Persons that require assistance with ambulation should be assisted to the Emergency Assembly Point (identified in the Evacuations section of this manual). Get out as safely and quickly as possible. The less time you and others are exposed to poisonous gases, heat, or flames, the safer everyone will be. Retrieve the nearest fire extinguisher and follow the “PASS” procedure. PASS is another acronym related to fire safetyan acronym that stands for Pull, Aim, Squeeze and Sweep respectively; in case of a fire and by selecting the appropriate type of fire extinguisher, it reminds the fire extinguisher user to do the following: P: to Pull the lock pin (breaking the plastic seal) on the fire extinguisher from its place. A: to Aim the extinguisher nozzle at the base of the fire/flames. S: to Squeeze or press the discharge handle and discharge the extinguisher within its effective range; and S: to Sweep from side to side at the base of the flames until the fire appears to be extinguished. Back away from an extinguished fire in case it flames up again
