Activation 11
Activation 11 : Radiation and Radiological Disasters. The process of inducing radioactivity. Most commonly used to refer to the induction of radioactivity in moderators, coolants, and structural and shielding materials, caused by irradiation with neutrons. The BSS definition - "The production of radionuclides by irradiation." - is technically adequate; however, the term 'production' gives a connotation that this is being done intentionally rather than, as is normally the case, incidentally. Care may be needed to avoid confusion when using the term activation in its every day sense of bringing into action (e.g. of safety systems, for which 'actuation' may be used)
