Charge 4 : All effects which are recognised as being of electric origin, such as lightning, the electric lamp, the dynamo and the electric motor are related to electric charges, either at rest on the surfaces of bodies or moving through the matter of which the bodies are composed in the form of a current of charge. The electric charges which flow in a metal to form what is called an electric current are electrons belonging to the metal atoms. Electric charges which are always associated with mass can be positive or negative, the two kinds being distinguished by the forces they exert on each other. Like charges repel, unlike charges attract. The unit 'of charge is the coulomb, originally defined as that quantity of charge, which when placed 1 metre away from a similar charge in vacuo experiences a force of 9 + 1013 newtons.
