Chernobyl 1 : A town in the Ukraine, U.S.S.R, site of a nuclear reactor that exploded and burned on 26 April 1987, causing extensive radioactive contamination locally and in distant countries, with deaths and agricultural and environmental damage. The exploded reactor has been permanently out of action. The most serious nuclear disaster up to that date, resulting also in extensive revision and strengthening of supervision by IAEA
