Active Volcano 4 : Natural Disaster. By a widely used but poor definition, an active volcano is one that is erupting or has erupted one or more times in recorded history (See: Decker and Decker, 1998). Active and potentially active (i.e., presently dormant) volcanoes occur in narrow belts that collectively comprise less than 1 percent of the Earth's total surface (Simkin et al., 1994)
