Chromatography 4

Chromatography 4 : Method of chemical analysis. Two principles: adsorption chromatography which used a solid adsorbent, e. g. alumina with special affinities for the adsorbed substances and, partition chromatography which involves the use of two immiscible solvent systems. Various methods have been developed on the basis of these two principles. Paper chromatography uses special grade filter paper as the adsorbent. Microgram quantities can be handled. Gas-liquid chromatography is a form of partition or adsorption chromatography in which the stationary phase is a liquid and the mobile phase a gas. Samples are vaporized before introduction. Can be used for submicrogram amounts. Thin layer chromatography in which compounds are separated by a suitable solvent or solvent mixture on a thin layer of adsorbent material coated on a glass plate
