Acute Effects (Toxicity) 10 :

Acute does not mean serious in this context. Acute effects are those which result from either a single exposure or several exposures over a short period of time (usually less than 24 hours). See: chronic effects. Toxicologists call effects acute either because they are apparent very soon after exposure and/or because they last for a short period of time. This is the same way that doctors use the word acute about diseases
