Critical Injuries


Critical Injuries :

Based on the critical injury indicator in the Enterprise Information Warehouse (EIW) Lost-time injuries - when the specific Part of Body and Nature of Injury codes (based on Canadian Standards Association Z95-96 codes ) - fall under the categories of: places life in jeopardy; involves the fracture of a leg or arm (excluding a finger or toe); involves the amputation of a leg, arm, hand or foot (excluding a finger or toe); produces unconsciousness; causes the loss of sight in an eye; burns to a major portion of the body. Note: Since the MOL tracks critical injuries that are in accordance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act, the WSIB Corporate Business Analytics Branch tracks them as per the critical injury indicator in the EIW. In addition, Corporate Business Analytics Branch does not track Serious Injuries. These are handled by the WSIB's Serious Injury Program. Other Definitions: Critical Injury (MOL) Definition - All of the same terms as the Critical Injury Indicator definition, except the MOL also includes "Results in Substantial Loss of Blood". Occupational Health & Safety Act -. R.S.O. 1990, Reg. 834, s. 1 states that "critically injured" means an injury of a serious nature that: (a) places life in jeopardy; (b) produces unconsciousness; (c) results in substantial loss of blood; (d) involves the fracture of a leg or arm but not a finger or toe; (e) involves the amputation of a leg, arm, hand or foot but not a finger or toe; (f) consists of burns to a major portion of the body, or (g) causes the loss of sight in an eye. WSIB Serious Injury Program Definition - Any injured worker who has been transferred to a major trauma hospital in Ontario and has a 100% Permanent Disability Pension and 60% NEL
