Critical Structures


Critical Structures : (1) Structures whose ongoing performance during an emergency is required or whose failure could threaten many lives. May include (1) structures such as nuclear power reactors or large dams whose failure might be catastrophic; (2) major communication, utility, and transportation systems; (3) involuntary- or high-occupancy buildings such as schools or prisons; and (4) emergency facilities such as hospitals, police and fire stations, and disaster-response centers. , (2) The primary physical structures, technical facilities and systems which are socially, economically or operationally essential to the functioning of a society or community, both in routine circumstances and in the extreme circumstances of an emergency.2) Critical Loss Facilities are hospital and health care facilities, public buildings, telecommunications, airports, energy systems (coal, nuclear etc.), bridges and other facilities that are critical to the recovery and rehabilitation of a region post-earthquake.
