Additive 01 : Chemistry and Chemical Disasters. (Techn) A chemical substance introduced in small quantities to materials or products to improve stability, protect against deterioration, or to impart a desired property. Examples are: antioxidant; preservative; antiknock agent; antifreeze agent; etc. Note: Examples in fire practice are addition of aluminum powder to increase the extinguishing effect of water, viscosity enhancers to retard water runoff, surfactants and other foam agents.
