Damping 07

Damping 07 :

Disaster Management. The reduction in amplitude of a seismic wave or oscillator due to friction and/or the internal absorption of energy by matter. In seismometry, a specific damping device (symbolized as a "Dashpot"; See: Fig. 5.5 in Chapter 5 in this Manual) is added in the design of a seismometer to diminish the effects of resonance and of the transient free oscillation. Fig. 5.22 in Chapter 5 of this Manual shows the dependence of normalized resonance curves on the damping coefficient h. In vibration analysis, a term that indicates the mechanism for the dissipation of the energy of motion. Viscous damping, which is proportional to the velocity of motion and is described by linear equations, is used to define different levels of response spectra and is commonly used to approximate the energy dissipation in the lower levels of earthquake response.
