Data base 1 : A collection of related data stored in a computer-based information system. A database can attend one or more applications and does not depend on the programmes that are used. A data base can be build from more than one file. It is an electronic archive and the foundation for an integrated data organisation in order to eliminate data redundancies. It is the base for information retrieval and the central component of a GIS. A relational data base is a data base using relations between units and attributes. The data are structured in tables and each table contains a common value in order to be joined with other tables
