Abrasive 1

Abrasive 1 : (Techn) An extremely hard natural or synthetic material used for grinding, cutting, or polishing. Examples are emery, diamond, corundum, sand and sandstone, silicon carbide, pumice, and fused alumina. Typically, granular or gritty substances are used for grinding, while rounded particles are used for polishing and buffing. Note: Abrasives are used in the form of (1) loose powders or grains, (2) paper or cloth coatings (sand-paper; emery, flint, or garnet cloth; etc), (3) grinding and polishing wheels, and (4) stones (hones, whetstones, oilstones, etc). Boron carbide (B4C), pumice, and boron nitride, BN (borazon), approach diamond in hardness and serve as excellent abrasive materials
