Davy Safety Lamp
Davy Safety Lamp : Lamp used by miners to prevent the lamp-flame from setting fire to gas in a mine. The flame is enclosed in wire gauze (woven wire) so that the gauze carries away the heat of the lamp's flame, and makes it impossible for it to set fire to gas outside. Also used to test for gas in a mine (the flame becomes blue). Davy was English, 1778-1829
