DR 09

DR 09 : Direct Reduction: A general name for processes for making iron or steel by reducing iron oxide ores at temperatures below the melting points of any of the ingredients. The product is known as DRI [direct reduced iron). The reducing agent may be carbon in some form, or carbon monoxide, or hydrogen, or a mixture of these. The Commission of the European Communities commissioned a literature study of all the DR processes. The Report classified the processes into three groups: Processes of great industrial significance, Processes with limited industrial significance, and Processes without industrial application. The following additional DR processes have been operated since 1979 and are described in separate entries: Accar, Circored, CODIR, DAV, DRC, OSIL, Plasmared, Purofer, SIIL, SPIREX, Tisco, USKO
