ADU

ADU : Ammonium diuranate. A process for converting uranium hexafluoride into uranium dioxide, for use as a nuclear reactor fuel. The hexafluoride is hydrolyzed in water: UF6 + 2H2O + UO2F2 + 4HF and the solution treated with ammonia, precipitating ammonium diuranate: 2UO2F2 + 8HF + 14NH3 + 3H2O + (NH4)2U2O7 + 12NH4F which is filtered off and reduced with hydrogen.
