Dry Powder 4 : Extinguishing medium consisting of finely ground chemicals comprising a main constituent, such as sodium bicarbonate, potassium bicarbonate or ammonium phosphate, and additives to improve its flow, storage and water repellent characteristics. It can be stored in containers under pressure or be ejected by the release of gas under pressure, and then by using specially designed nozzles directed onto a fire in a concentrated cloud. The cloud helps protect the firefighter from the flames. It can also be used in polythene bags for piling on metal fires, the polythene melts and the contents smother the fire. Sodium bicarbonate is the basis of most chemical powders with a metallic stearate as a water-proofing agent. Used on electrical fires, metal fires including radioactive metals and flammable liquid fires
