DU 3 : Depleted Uranium. The relative danger of Depleted Uranium (DU) should be compared to the release of radioactive uranium and thorium from coalfired power plants, in the amount of 2,000 tons per year in the United States according to a report by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Update: scientific studies released in February and March, 2003 did not prove a link between exposure to depleted uranium used in NATO weapons in the Balkans and the onset of cancer or other illnesses.
