Dust 01 : (Env Prot) Finely divided solids sufficiently light to float in the air but settling under the influence of gravity on surfaces when not affected by air currents or other disturbances. Fine suspended dust can be inhaled, swallowed, and absorbed by the body. See also: Aerosol. Note: Dust particles range in size from 0. 1 To 25 microns (1 Micron = 1/10,000 Cm = 1/25,000 In. Dusts above 5 microns in size usually will not remain airborne long enough to present an inhalation problem. Solid particles are generated by handling, crushing, grinding, rapid impact,detonation, and decrepitation of organic or inorganic materials such as rock, ore, metal, coal, wood, and grain. Dusts do not tend to flocculate except under electrostatic forces. combustible dusts are classified as: (1) those that can be ignited by a small heat source and propagate flame easily; (2) those that ignite readily but require a substantial heat source; and (3) those that do not form clouds readily and do not burn rapidly
