Adverse Effect 7 : Medicine. This is an abnormal, undesirable, or harmful effect to an organism, indicated by some result such as mortality, altered food consumption, altered body and organ weights, altered enzyme levels, or visible pathological change. A statistically significant change from the normal state of an organism exposed to a chemical is not necessarily a biologically adverse effect. The magnitude of the departure from the normal range, the consistency of the out-of-range effect, and the relationship of the effect to the physiological, biochemical, and total well-being of the organism must be considered. An effect may be classed as adverse if it causes functional or anatomical damage, causes irreversible change in the homeostasis of the organism, or increases the susceptibility of the organism to other chemical or biological stress. A non-adverse effect will usually be reversed when exposure to the chemical ceases
