Earthquake Magnitude 2

Earthquake Magnitude 2 : Natural Disaster. A quantity that is characteristic of the total energy released by an earthquake, in contrast to 'intensity' which subjectively describes earthquake effects at a particular place. Richter in 1935 devised the logarithmic magnitude scale in current use to define local magnitude (ML) in terms of the motion that would be measured by a standard type of seismograph located 100 kilometres from the epicentre of an earthquake. Several other magnitude scales are also: in use, for example body-wave magnitude (MB) and surface-wave magnitude (MS) which use body waves and surface waves respectively. The scale is openended but the largest known earthquake magnitudes are about MS 8.5. See also: Earthquake Intensity
