Earthquakes 4 : A series of vibrations in the Earth's crust that are of such a magnitude that they can be observed or sensed without seismic instruments. Such disruptions are initiated along fault lines and have the ability to cause widespread damage as the geological structures that have been affected attempt to resettle after the disturbance. One of the worst earthquakes ever recorded occurred in Tangshan, China, on July 28, 1976. More than 250 000 people lost their lives and the city of Tangshan was reduced to rubble.
