Ebola : Medicine. An RNA virus of the Filovirus family that causes one of the viral hemorrhagic fevers. Contact with infected body fluids rather than aerosols may be the principal mode of transmission. The incubation period is 20 to 21 days. The initial symptoms are fever, headache, sore throat, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea. Those patients who exhibit hemorrhage usually follow a downhill course to shock and death
