Effective Stress

Effective Stress : Natural Disaster. In soil mechanics, the sum of the inter-particle contact forces acting across a plane through a soil element divided by the area of the plane. On a horizontal plane, the effective stress is defined as the total overburden pressure minus the instantaneous pore water pressure. In rock mechanics, it also means the stress above the pore pressure. See Lockner and Beeler (2002), and Youd (2003)
