EPIRB 7

EPIRB 7 : The emergency locator transmitter (ELT) and its marine equivalent the emergency position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) are radio transmitters which send out radio distress signals. The transmitters can be activated either manually, or automatically. The signals are picked up by orbiting satellites (SEE SARSAT) and can be tracked by planes or boats equipped with direction finders. Since their introduction in the early 1980s, the transmitters have saved thousands of lives and drastically reduced the number and cost of large scale searches. (Maritime/Risk)
