Excursion 1 : Nuclear Energy and Nuclear Disasters. (Techn) A sudden, rapid rise in the level of power in an electrical or electronic circuit or in a reactor. Note: Electrical surges, sometimes caused by lightning, can damage motors, affect electronic equipment, and blow fuses or trip circuit breakers. Excursions in a reactor are usually counteracted by the negative temperature coefficient of the reactor or by automatic control rods
