Explosion 01

Explosion 01 : (Comb) The effect of an exothermic combustion reaction occurring in an enclosed space, characterized by a destructive buildup of pressure. In popular terms, an explosion is any rapid pressure rise in a system that ruptures a containeror enclosure, causing pressure wave damage. Thus, one may have an explosion due to steam overpressure, as in a boiler explosion. An explosion may be either a homogeneous self-catalyzed reaction or a traveling combustion wave in a confining vessel. A detonation is often called an ex-plosion, though in this case the pressure wave develops without confinement and has the characteristics of an explosion because it propagates at supersonic speed. A detonation is an explosion but not all explosions are detonations. See also: Combustion; Deflagration; Flame. Note: Window panes shatter at blast pressures of approximately 1 psi
