Extinguisher 1 : A portable item of firefighting equipment containing a fire extinguishing medium which is expelled by internal pressure or by the action of a self-contained hand pump. (BS 4422(4)). There are four classes of extinguisher namely: A - for solid combustibles such as wood. B - flammable liquids such as petroleum. C - gases burning as a jet (includes liquefied gas spills). D - combustible metals such as magnesium. Any fire started by electrical equipment must be a fire of class A, B, or D and the normal procedure would be to cut off the electricity supply and use the appropriate extinguisher according to what is burning. For class A and B fires the extinguishers are rated according to the size of the fire they can extinguish using the Fibonacci series, 1, I, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21 etc. (each number is the sum of the preceding two terms
