Extreme Heat Safety 14 : Heat Illness Signs/Symptoms & Management: Heat illness is a general term used to describe many different conditions that can result from physical activity in an environment of extreme heat and/or humidity. These conditions are a result of the body becoming dehydrated and/or losing the ability to cool itself. The signs and symptoms of heat illness do NOT necessarily run on a continuum. This means that a person could suffer from heat stroke without showing less severe heat illness conditions such as heat cramps. Please keep this in mind when evaluating the signs and symptoms of your athletes. (1) Heat Cramps - Signs and Symptoms: (a) Cramping that occurs in active muscles; (b) Cramping in the abdominals and legs most common. (2) Heat Syncope - Signs and Symptoms: (a) Weakness; (b) Fatigue; (c) Fainting. (3) Heat Exhaustion - Signs and Symptoms: (a) Rapid weight loss (water); (b) Muscle cramps; (c) Nausea /vomiting; (d) Headache; (e) Reduced sweating (clammy skin); (f) Dizziness / Fainting; (g) Fatigue or weakness. (4) Heat Stroke - Signs and Symptoms: (a) No sweating; (b) Hot, dry skin; (c) Nausea /vomiting; (d) Seizures; (e) Disorientation; (f) Loss of consciousness. (5) Heat Cramps - Management: (a) Rest in a cool place; (b) Gentle stretching and massage muscle; (c) Drink WATER. (6) Heat Syncope -Management: (a) Lay athlete down in cool shady area; (b) Drink WATER; (c) Athlete is NOT allowed back to activity; (d) Should be seen by a physician. (7) Heat Exhaustion -Management: (a) Treat heat exhaustion as an emergency; (b) Call for emergency medical assistance & move patient to shade/cool building; (c) Remove clothing and immerse torso in ice/cold water; (d) Place ice bags over pulse points (armpits, groin and neck); (e) If conscious give WATER slowly. (8) Heat Stroke -Management: (a) Heat stroke is life-threatening! (b) Call for emergency medical assistance & move patient to shade/cool building; (c) Remove clothing and immerse torso in ice/cold water; (d) Place ice bags over pulse points (armpits, groin and neck); (e) Do NOT give WATER (fluids)!
