Fallout 01 : (Env Prot) (1) Precipitation of radioactive particles from a nuclear explosion. (2) Airborne radioactive particles that fall to the ground in various patterns following a nuclear explosion. Note: Local fallout reaches the earth's surface within 24 hours after a nuclear detonation. Material injected into the troposphere does not fall out locally but usually is deposited in relatively narrow bands around the earth at about the latitude of injection. Stratospheric injection results in slow, worldwide fallout. Also called: Radioactive Fallout
