Fault 02 : Natural Disaster. (1-a) An imperfection in an object or machine. Syn: Defect, Flaw. Types: (1) Blister: A flaw on a surface resulting when an applied substance does not adhere (as an air bubble in a coat of paint). (2) Bug, Glitch: A fault or defect in a computer program, system, or machine. (3) Hole: A fault. Type of: Imperfection, Imperfectness: The state or an instance of being imperfect. (1-b) The quality of being inadequate or falling short of perfection. Syn: Demerit. Ant: Merit, Virtue: Any admirable quality or attribute. Type of: Worth: The quality that renders something desirable or valuable or useful. (1-c) A wrong action attributable to bad judgment or ignorance or inattention. Syn: Error, Mistake. (1-d) (Geology) A crack in the earth's crust resulting from the displacement of one side with respect to the other. Syn: Break, Faulting, Fracture, Geological Fault, Shift. Examples: (1) Denali Fault: A major open geological fault in Alaska. (2) San Andreas Fault: A major geological fault in California; runs from San Diego to San Francisco; the source of serious earthquakes. Type of: Cleft, Crack, Crevice, Fissure, Scissure: A long narrow opening. (1-e) (Electronics) Equipment failure attributable to some defect in a circuit (loose connection or insulation failure or short circuit etc). Type of: Breakdown, Equipment Failure: A cessation of normal operation. (1-f) (Sports) A serve that is illegal (e.g., that lands outside the prescribed area). Types: (1) Double Fault: (tennis) Two successive faults in serving resulting in the loss of the point. (2) Footfault: A fault that occurs when the server in tennis fails to keep both feet behind the baseline. Type of: Serve, Service: (sports) A stroke that puts the ball in play. (1-g) Responsibility for a bad situation or event. Type of: Responsibility, Responsibleness: A form of trustworthiness; the trait of being answerable to someone for something or being responsible for one's conduct. (v.) (1) Put or pin the blame on.
