Fault Zone


Fault Zone : The fault plane of the geometric-mathematical model of an earthquake is usually a planar surface in an elastic medium. The actual fault is a zone of finite width, comprising also secondary fault branches (see Fig. 3.6 ??? in Chapter 3 of this Manual), in which non-elastic processes occur during the earthquake, sometimes also called a break-down zone or cohesive zone.
