FLIR 4 : Forward Looking Infrared Radar: a sensor which uses variations in heat to detect objects. Unlike NVGs, FLIR is still effective in extremely low light conditions. Its use in SAR is restricted due to the high cost of the units, although the new SAR aircraft are likely to be equipped with FLIR. (Marine SAR)
