Floodway 13 :

The channel, stream and that portion of the land liable to flooding necessary to convey the main flow of floodwater and usually comprise the high hazard portion of the floodplain where most development is to be avoided. Floodways are usually areas where a significant volume of water flows during floods and are areas which even if only partially blocked, would cause a significant redistribution of flood flow, or significant increase in flood levels, which in turn may adversely affect other areas. They are often, but not necessarily, the areas of deeper flow or the areas where higher velocities occur
