The first thing you as an individual can do is to become educated about them. Ready yourself in other ways as well - involve your community, start awareness programs, and make sure your family and home are well-protected. Supply yourself with the necessary items to help yourself and others out of catastrophic circumstances. Even if disaster does not strike your area, it does in other countries. If you would like to help other people who have been affected by disasters, try contacting some disaster relief organizations or the American Red Cross.
