Free-Field Motion

Free-Field Motion : Strong ground motion that is not modified by the earthquake caused motions of nearby buildings or other structures or geologic features. In analyses, often defined as the motion that would occur at the interface of the structure and the foundation if the structure were not present. A fully instrumented building site typically includes one or more accelerographs located some distance from the structure to obtain a better approximation of the free-field motion.
