Absorption Coefficient 3 : Nuclear Energy and Nuclear Disasters. (Spectr; Symb: a) A measure of the decrease in intensity due to absorption of light, sound, or particles passing through a substance. If the beam is also scattered, that portion is called the scattering coefficient. The sum of absorption and scattering coefficients is the extinction coefficient. See: Absorption Spectrum
