Air-coupled Surface Wave

Air-coupled Surface Wave : Despite the great density contrast between air and ground, atmospheric pressure disturbances traveling over the Earth's surface can produce surface waves if the phase velocity is equal to the acoustic velocity in the air. Such a coupling with air has been observed for flexural waves in ice sheets floating on the ocean and for Rayleigh waves in ground with low-velocity surface layers. A simultaneous arrival of air waves and tidal disturbances was observed after the well known explosion of the volcano Krakatoa in 1883
