Gas Mask 1 : (Safety) A face mask used to protect the eyes and respiratory tract from noxious fumes, gases, and vapors. See: Breathing Apparatus. Note: Three principal types exist: (1) protective masks that filter out contaminants in the air (called respirator); (2) rebreathing masks that operate as closed systems, absorbing carbon dioxide and generating oxygen; and (3) air masks that are supplied with oxygen from a cylinder or with pure air from a remote compressor
