Absorption 02 : (1) (Chem; Phys) The taking up of one material into the bulk of another, as a gas by a liquid, or water by a sponge. Note: The mechanism is usually physical, but chemical forces also can be involved. See: Colloids. Cf: adsorption; sorption. (2) (Acoust; Opt) The attenuation of electromagnetic energy, sound, or incident particles by an absorbing medium. The process in which the number or the energy of particles, photons, waves, or vibrations passing through a medium is reduced by interaction with the medium. See: Dispersion; Scattering. (3) (Psych) A state of deep concentration or rapt attention to an object or activity. (4) (Med) The taking up of fluids or other substances, such as medication, by the skin, mucous surfaces, or vessels
