A GIO, often a component in an organization's Information Technology (IT) infrastructure, coordinates Geographic Information System (GIS) spatial information and technology for multiple divisions, departments, agencies or jurisdictions to cross functional boundaries in an effort toward efficiencies and official clarity from standardized methodologies. Relates to the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA) with respect to governmental GIS professionals
